The Directory of College Cooperative Education Programs, which is available in the LHSS Guidance Center, provides students, parents, educators, and employers with detailed information on the cooperative education programs at 450 plus colleges in the United States. Cooperative Education ( co-op ) is an academic program that integrates classroom studies with a series of paid, productive work experiences in a field related to a student’s career or education goals.
While co-op is primarily an educational program it has other benefits of interest to students and parents. The financial gains from employer-paid wages and the career advantages of proven work experience in a student’s desired profession make co-op education attractive. Because it is offered in a wide variety of institutions and academic majors, students interested in almost any career or major can find a co-op program with links to employers in their fields. Each year, thousands of students participate in co-op education, enhancing their academic programs by working for one of the approximately 50,000 co-op employers throughout the country and abroad. These employers include multinational corporations, small entrepreneurial businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Nearly 85% of the top 100 companies on the Fortune 500 List employ students through college co-op programs.
As a partnership among students, colleges, and employers, co-op programs offer each of these audiences’ important benefits. This directory outlines those advantages and provides program profiles from 460 colleges, including community and technical colleges, liberal arts institutions, universities, and graduate schools. This directory is particularly aimed at those participating in the college selection process – students and parents.
