Academics

Dana Kaempfe
Lutheran South offers a college preparatory curriculum for all of its students with the goal of preparing each student for continuing study at the college level. To achieve this goal, students are required and/or encouraged to take a solid core curriculum of English, mathematics, science, social science and foreign language courses in addition to theology, practical arts, fine arts, physical education, and health.

Lutheran South offers Advanced Placement and 1-8-1-8 Dual Enrollment courses with St. Louis University, allowing its students to earn college credit while still in high school. We also offer an accelerated math program for qualifying freshmen and an honors section of English I and English II.

Lutheran South requires 28 credits for graduation and offers those credits within a block schedule. On "A" days, students have four 90 minute class periods covering four courses; on "B" days students also have four

90-minute class periods including three additional courses and a study period known as seminar. The block schedule is similar to a college schedule, helping the students adjust to longer class periods and giving

them two days to complete homework or study for tests. The block schedule allows the students to take 7 courses each semester, adding up to 7 credits each year for a total of 28 credits.

The Academic Guide featured in this section explains each course in detail. The 4-Year Planner allows students and potential students to plan which courses they would like to take each year to accomplish the goal of preparing for college.

Lutheran South courses are organized within academic departments. For more information about a specific course offering, please contact the department chairman.
